Andy Murray plays doubles with Lopez at Queens

Queens Club semi-final preview plus Andy Murray plays more doubles

It’s a huge day at Queens Club for four singles players but potentially an even bigger day for Sir Andy Murray

The mens singles semi finals kick off at the Queens Club Fever Tree championships at 1pm today and both matches will see classic old guard versus next generation match ups that we’ve become accustomed to other the past couple of seasons.

Daniil Medvedev takes on Giles Simon first on centre court followed by Feliciano Lopez against Felix Auger-Aliassime, the young Canadian taking to grass like he was born on it.

Many tennis followers are hoping that both younger men prevail to set up a mouth watering clash of the next generation in tomorrows final, but history tells us on the big occasions it is often experience that wins through and both Simon and Lopez have bags of that. tennishead predicts that Medvedev will play Lopez in tomorrows final.

However, these important singles matches will be followed by the next stage in the dramatic comeback of Sir Andy Murray as he bids to become the doubles champion at Queen’s Club for the first time. Murray is partnering Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez who holds the record for playing the most tie breaks in a career on the ATP Tour. Few would be surprised if his singles and doubles matches today involved more tie breaks.

Murray was showing signs of his old play especially when he hit this lob over the head of fellow British Davis Cup star Dan Evans:

Lopez and Murray first need to complete their match against the British pair of Evans and Ken Skupski, the are leading by a set but are 5-4 behind in the second set. They will then need to overcome Henry Kontinen and John Peers in the semi final. This could set up a classic doubles final tomorrow if the Bryan twins can win their own semi final battle today.

Huge excitement was created by Murray this week when he announced he would be playing the mens doubles at Wimbledon with Pierre Hugues Herbert of France who has himself won all four Grand Slam doubles titles. Murray then set tongues wagging with his revelation that so far no-one had accepted his offer to play mixed doubles at Wimbledon. We are certain he won’t be without a partner for long!
