Queens and Eastbourne to keep full ATP ranking points with Wimbledon under review

The ATP have announced that the UK summer tournaments at Queen’s and Eastbourne will not be stripped of ATP ranking points over a decision to ban players from Russia and Belarus, but the decision on Wimbledon “remains under review”.

Last month, The Lawn Tennis Association and All England Club ruled that as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian players were not able to compete at SW19 and UK tournament’s this year.

The ban means that the likes of top ten ATP players Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev as well as world number seven Aryna Sabalenka will miss Wimbledon, as well as any lead-up events in the country, and will not have the chance to defend any ranking points from last year.

Purportedly, the ATP and WTA met in Madrid earlier this month to discuss scrapping ranking points at Wimbledon following the ban, with many players calling for strong reactions from the governing bodies to contest the ban.

Now, the ATP have announced that they are going to offer full ranking points for the ATP tour events in Eastbourne and at Queen’s, with their decision on Wimbledon still to be decided.

“Following extensive consultation with the Player Council and Tournament Council, the ATP Board has today confirmed that this season’s ATP Tour events in Queen’s and Eastbourne will proceed as normal, offering full ranking points.

“LTA’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes is however contrary to ATP rules and undermines the ability for players of any nationality to enter tournaments based on merit, without discrimination – a fundamental principle of the ATP Tour.

“Sanctions related to LTA’s violation of ATP rules will now be assessed separately under ATP governance. ATP’s response to Wimbledon’s decision remains under review, with more to be communicated in due course.”

However, the WTA are yet to announce a decision about the tour events in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne.
