Last year’s Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva fell to a 6-2 6-3 defeat to Tsvetana Pironkova to bow out of the tournament in round three.

The second seed defeated the 23-year-old Bulgarian – a surprise entity last year – in the 2010 semi-finals, but struggled for any consistency in a display that saw her strike 18 unforced errors.

Pironkova, will face Venus Williams in the fourth round after the five-time Wimbledon champion coasted past Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez for the loss of just two games.

The next round allows the American to extract revenge after she was defeated by the 32 seed in last year’s quarter-final.

“Last year, unfortunately I didn’t play that well,” said the seven-time Grand Slam champ. “On a competitive level, I don’t feel I competed well. Regardless of how I play, I know I’ll be competing this time.

“This is a fourth round. I’m ready to bring my best game and my best competition.”
