Patrick Mouratoglou explains why losing the Wimbledon final was the ‘best thing that happened’ to Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz’s fortunes on the ATP Tour have come full circle, having captured a second US Open crown.

After all, Alcaraz lost the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner just two months ago, marking a stumbling step in the Spaniard’s altogether successful career so far.

The loss was certainly a blow for the Spaniard: it was the first Grand Slam final he had lost in six attempts.

The Spaniard revealed it took him just a few hours to recover from his Wimbledon final loss, and he has not lost a match since leaving London, capturing both the Cincinnati Open and US Open titles.

Following these sets of results, Alcaraz has been told his Wimbledon final loss was the ‘best thing that happened’ to him.

Patrick Mouratoglou says the Wimbledon final was a wake-up call for Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz seems rejuvenated; hungrier than ever to succeed and cement himself as one of the best talents the sport has ever witnessed.

This is something recognised by Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, who has noted the importance of Alcaraz’s Wimbledon final loss in turning the Spaniard’s fortunes around.

On his YouTube channel, Mouratoglou said: “I think this Wimbledon final was the best thing that happened to Carlos.

“Because if you think about it, Jannik won that Wimbledon final and was one point away from winning four Grand Slams in a row, one point away!

“Because if he would have won that match at Roland Garros, he would have won the four Grand Slams in a row.

“Jannik was really the boss, he was the boss.

“Why was this Wimbledon final so important? Because of the feeling that Carlos had in this final. He had a feeling that Jannik was really overpowering him, was better than him, was playing faster than him and he had no solutions.

And I think it was a wake-up call for him. Very important wake-up call, and after that final he thought, ‘okay this guy is starting to be better than me, I can’t let this happen.’

“And that was key in his decision to start working on new things and improving.

“By the way, same attitude from Jannik in press conference after the (US Open) final.

“I realise I’m too predictable. I realise physically Carlos has the solutions. I need to improve, I need to be more unpredictable, I’m prepared to do the job, I’m going to do it even during the matches, even if it makes me lose a few matches.

“Same attitude, attitude of the biggest champions.”

Carlos Alcaraz is the Australian Open favourite

For the duration of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s careers, the Italian has been viewed as the superior hard-court player.

However, Alcaraz has dispelled that trail of thought at the US Open.

The Spaniard is now the clear favourite for the Australian Open title, the only Grand Slam title missing from his collection.

It must be noted that Sinner is the two-time defending champion in Australia. However, Alcaraz’s brilliance in New York has proven that it is only a matter of time before Alcaraz completes the ‘Career Grand Slam.’
