Paris Masters seeds fall

Paris Masters seeds continue to fall as Holger Rune romps past Andrey Rublev

The Paris Masters has now seen four of its top eight seeds out before the quarter-finals before day four of the tournament is even through.

Heading into Thursday 2020 champion and fourth seed Daniil Medvedev and second seed Rafael Nadal had already lost their opening match after receiving first round byes.

Now Casper Ruud, seeded third, and Andrey Rublev, seventh, have fallen in the last 16. Both men will be heading to the ATP Finals but lost to Next Gen ATP Finals competitors in Paris.

Ruud lost to 20-year-old Lorenzo Musetti 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Musetti is set to make his second appearance in Milan after competing at the Next Gen Finals last year. He is now into his first career Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Not long after, Rublev was downed by 19-year-old Holger Rune 6-4, 7-5. Like Musetti, the Danish teen is also into his first career Masters 1000 quarter-final. There he will face world number one and fellow 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz. The two have played once before, in the round robin of last year’s Next Gen ATP Finals, which Alcaraz won in straight sets.

The Paris Masters could see a seventh different man claim a Masters title in 2022. That after 2021 also saw seven different champions across eight events.
