Ons Jabeur recalls Wimbledon promise as she looks to win first major
Ons Jabeur says she made a promise to herself that she would win Wimbledon this year – and now it’s time to deliver.
Jabeur won her semi-final against Tatjana Maria on Thursday to advance into her first major final.
It is the latest success in a landmark year for the Tunisian, and she is not ready to stop yet.
“[It] feels amazing really,” Jabeur said when asked how it felt to be a Wimbledon finalist.
“The kind of result I was hoping for. Now one more match, one more step, to continue and hopefully get the title.”
Despite Ons Jabeur enjoying a fine year, she said her quest to win Wimbledon this year actually started back in 2021.
“Not to lie to you, the dream kind of started last year when I enjoyed playing here, enjoyed the crowd.
“I didn’t play so many Wimbledons before. Usually it was the first and second round. It’s tricky to play on grass.
“I knew I was playing good on grass because of my game and everything. But last year, Melanie reminded me, my mental coach, I told her ‘I’m coming back next year for the title’ when I lost in the quarterfinals.
“I just love everything around here, the atmosphere and everything. It was my main goal from the beginning of the season, and even from last year.
“I just love it here. I don’t know. Everything about the energy, I just love being here.”
