Olympics Social Slice: Djokovic through; Murray involved in doubles upset

On today’s Olympic Social Slice, Novak Djokovic is safely through to the second round, whilst Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury cause a huge upset in the doubles.

Firstly, Novak Djokovic defeated Bolivian Hugo Dellien in the first round of the Tokyo Olympics 6-2 6-2 in an hour and three minutes.

The Serbian will now face Jan-Lennard Struff as he bids to get one step closer to the elusive gold medal.

British doubles pairing Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury caused one of the upsets of day one at the Games as they defeated No. 2 seeds Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in straight sets.

The French pairing were one of the favourites to take the gold medal in Tokyo, though were no match for the newly-formed British pairing, who march into the second round.

There is just something about Murray at the Games!

Another singles player through to the second round is Daniil Medvedev, who ousted Kazakh star Alexander Bublik in a hard-fought opener.

The Russian defeated Bublik 6-4 7-6(8), despite trailing the second set 3-0.

In the women’s, Iga Swiatek was one of the biggest names to book her place in the second round in Tokyo.

The Pole made history after beating Mona Barthel 6-2 6-2, as she became only the third Polish player to win a singles match at the Olympics.

If you thought day one was full of great tennis matches, just you wait until tomorrow.

With Ash Barty, Naomi Osaka, Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas all in action, it promises to be another fantastic day of tennis.
