Novak Djokovic v David Goffin: Preview of the Wimbledon 2019 men’s quarter final

2018 champion Novak Djokovic will look to extend his unbeaten Wimbledon run to 12 matches as he takes on Belgium’s David Goffin in the quarter final of Wimbledon.

The two have met on six occasions already, with Novak Djokovic winning five of them, including their only Grand Slam meeting which came at Roland Garros in 2013. Goffin however did record his only victory against Djokovic at their last meeting at Monte Carlo in 2017.

Bidding to win his fifth Wimbledon and 16th Grand Slam title, Djokovic goes in as favourite against Goffin. Ranked 22 places higher than the Belgian, Djokovic is playing in his 11th Wimbledon quarter final. The man from Belgrade has only been knocked out at this stage on two occasions. In 2009 he lost to Tommy Haas in four sets and in 2017 he retired in the second set against Tomas Berdych due to injury.

The world number one has looked comfortable during his progress to the quarter final. He breezed to a straight sets victories against Philipp Kohlschreiber and Denis Kudla in his first two matches, before being tested by Polish young gun Hubert Hurkacz in a four sets victory. But it was back to plain sailing form in the fourth round as he defeated French ‘NextGen’ start Ugo Humbert 6-3 6-2 6-3.

David Goffin is making his first Wimbledon quarter final appearance. He had previously been knocked out in the fourth round twice, in 2015 and 2016 when he suffered defeats to Wawrinka and Raonic respectively. He has only managed to win one set in his two previous Grand Slam quarter finals, coming at the 2016 Roland Garros in a four sets defeat to Dominic Thiem. His second was at the Australian Open two years ago when he was crushed 6-3 6-2 6-4 at the hand of Grigor Dimitrov.

On route to the final Goffin steamed through his first two rounds, with impressive straight sets wins against Bradley Klahn and Jeremy Chardy. He then defeated 11th seed Daniil Medvedev in a five setter that lasted more than three and a half hours, before going on to beat Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco in four sets.

The winner of this quarter final will face the winner of surprise quarter final pairing Guido Pella and Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated Milos Raonic and Benoit Paire in the fourth rounds respectively.
