‘He is human’ – Top analyst says Novak Djokovic ‘won hearts’ at US Open

Mischa Zverev believes Novak Djokovic finally showed his ‘human’ side in defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final.

Djokovic was attempting to complete the calendar Grand Slam – a feat that has not been achieved in men’s tennis for 52 years.

It was not to be, with Medvedev taking ruthless advantage of a below-par Djokovic to claim his first major title.

However, Djokovic played the final game of the match with tears in his eyes after being boisterously backed by the New York crowd, and Eurosport expert Zverev believes a connection was made.

“In the end he is human because I think it’s the first time I’ve seen him cry on a tennis court,” Mischa Zverev said of Novak Djokovic.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve won or lost, he is usually a man of steel.

“He is so focussed, like a machine but we saw today he is human. He didn’t win today but I think he won the hearts of the New Yorkers, that’s for sure.

One the match instead, Zverev added: “Medvedev came out and really tried to slow down the game with his backhand and then sting like a scorpion with his forehand.

“So, he had a game plan and did really, really well. He was so focussed and determined and his game plan worked out perfectly, Novak wasn’t sure what to do.”
