Novak Djokovic gives classy message to tearful Denis Shapovalov: ‘I’d like to give him a big round of applause’
The scoreline in the Wimbledon semi-final did not do justice to the performance of Denis Shapovalov, according to Novak Djokovic.
World number one Djokovic managed to overcome the Canadian youngster in straight sets, promoting Shapovaov to leave Centre Court in tears.
However, Shapovalov gave a fine example of himself and just lacked the experience to make the right decisions during key points in th match.
But, while he may not have won a place in a first Grand Slam final, he certainly won a fan in Djokovic.
“The scoreline doesn’t say enough about Denis’s performance and match,’ Novak Djokovic said.
“He was serving for the first set, probably the better player for most of the second set and had many chances.
A sterling effort in just his 10th singles match at #Wimbledon
No doubt we’ll be seeing plenty more of @denis_shapo on this stage in the future… pic.twitter.com/TnMlEIBAtf

“I’d like to give him a big round of applause for everything he has done today and also these few weeks.
“This has been his first semi-final of a Grand Slam. You could see he was emotional, we will see a lot of him in the future, he is a great player.”
