Novak Djokovic reveals he ‘does not know’ if he will play at upcoming Australian Open

Novak Djokovic has left his Australian Open defence in major doubt after revealing he ‘does not know’ if he will travel to Melbourne in January.

The Serbian has won more Grand Slams in Australia than any other player in the tournament’s history, though could miss the event after refusing to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

Djokovic has won the last three majors at Melbourne Park and would become the most successful men’s singles player ever should he win in Australia.

However, the current vaccination laws in Australia rules that players will have to quarantine upon arrival and be vaccinated, with Victoria state making the vaccine mandatory for all athletes.

“Things being as they are, I still don’t know if I will go to Melbourne,” Djokovic told the online edition of Serbian daily Blic.

“I will not reveal my status whether I have been vaccinated or not, it is a private matter and an inappropriate inquiry.

“People go too far these days in taking the liberty to ask questions and judge a person. Whatever you say ‘yes, no, maybe, I am thinking about it’, they will take advantage.”

“Of course I want to go [to Australia],” Djokovic said.

“Australia is my most successful Grand Slam tournament. I want to compete, I love this sport and I am still motivated.
