However, Djokovic is top in finals with 55 to Nadal’s 53, and in titles with 38 to Nadal’s 36. He could yet close the gap in Bercy with Nadal out of the competition.

Novak Djokovic will take on Italian youngster Lorenzo Musetti for a place in the semi-finals. The two have done battle twice before, with Djokovic winning on both occasions.

Their most recent encounter came at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February, but their more memorable match-up came at the 2021 French Open. Musetti looked on the brink of despatching the then world number one after leading by two sets to love in the fourth round.

He then faded to lose sets three and four 6-1, 6-0 before retiring from the match down 4-0 in the decider.
