Novak Djokovic just embarrassed every ATP player except for Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Novak Djokovic surprised everyone at the Australian Open, where his dreams of further Grand Slam success were ended only by world number one Carlos Alcaraz.

Djokovic boasts 11 titles at the hard-court Grand Slam in Melbourne, more than any other man, but nobody could have imagined such a stunning run this year, perhaps not even the player himself.

He’s 38 years old, and was placed in the same half of the Australian Open draw as two-time defending champion and serial winner Jannik Sinner.

But Djokovic passed a very tricky test against Sinner in the semifinals, before falling short of similar heroics in the final against Alcaraz.

Tennis fans were undoubtedly expecting either the Italian or the Spaniard to lift the trophy from the very start, and that is exactly what happened.

What do you think is Carlos Alcaraz’s best surface and why?

Novak Djokovic has embarrassed everyone except Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Djokovic, however, returned to his former self in Melbourne, and in doing so embarrassed every ATP player except for the leading duo.

Sinner and Alcaraz have been the dominant forces in men’s tennis for some time, combining to win each of the last nine Grand Slam titles.

Before the dominance started, Djokovic was the player to beat, claiming three of the four titles in 2023, as well as losing one final to Alcaraz.

Three years have passed, but despite the Serbian getting older, he is remarkably still the biggest challenger to Sinner and Alcaraz.

It is a testament to his ability and physical prowess, but at the same time should serve as a real wake-up call to the other ATP Tour players.

They have just been embarrassed by Djokovic, who in no way should still represent the next best thing after the two superstars.

He’s just proven that he very much still is that player thanks to his Australian Open run, but also because of the fact that he’s now third in the world rankings.

As has been the case for some time, Alcaraz and Sinner are miles ahead in the top two spots, but Djokovic now impressively has the best chance of disrupting that monopoly.

Which ATP players could pose a genuine threat to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner?

Whether or not the dominance of Sinner and Alcaraz is boring for men’s tennis is another debate entirely, but it’s clear that they are crying out for a challenger.

A handful of contenders have come and gone, but none have been able to break the spell, including Djokovic.

Importantly, however, the veteran should not be the player tasked with such a burden, having just spent the majority of his career in a fierce battle with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

That burden should instead fall on the shoulders of the younger players on the ATP Tour, who arguably have a greater chance than the seasoned veterans.

Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev all fall into the latter category, but their chances of Grand Slam success may now be behind them.

Fortunately there are a handful of exciting talents in the former grouping, including Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien.

With slightly more experience, there should also be hope for Ben Shelton, Jack Draper and Lorenzo Musetti, but remarkably all three have had severe setbacks due to injury.

There are also one or two players in the middle ground that could still pose a threat to Alcaraz and Sinner, namely Alex de Minaur and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
