Novak Djokovic despatched in Monte Carlo as Tour return abruptly ended by World No.46
Novak Djokovic has been convincingly beaten by Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his first round of the Monte Carlo Masters
Novak Djokovic was hoping for a happy return to the professional tour after a self imposed break due to his refusal to take a COVID vaccine, but the 22 year old from Malaga had other ideas and upset the script in emphatic fashion.
On a windy Court Rainier III in Monaco at the Monte Carlo Country Club, Davidovic Fokina came through 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 to score the biggest win of his career and will now face the winner of Daniel Evans and David Goffin. Davidovic Fokina gave it everything he had including multiple full length dives that left him covered in red dirt and red blood from a scuffed right hand.

But it was the form of Djokovic that will concern many fans as the Serbian 20 time Grand Slam winner looked out of sorts against a player he would normally expect to despatch unscathed.
Djokovic now faces a race to find his game in advance of the French Open which starts in just 6 weeks time. With Rafa Nadal showing such strong form there is the distinct possibility of the Spanish ‘King of Clay’ winning in Roland Garros and taking a 22 – 20 lead in their race to be named the leading men’s Grand Slam champion of all time.
