Nick Kyrgios Wimbledon 2022

Nick Kyrgios ‘super excited’ as he follows Wimbledon run with another ATP final

Nick Kyrgios continued his incredible recent renaissance by reaching the final of Washington.

The Australian contested his first Grand Slam final this summer at Wimbledon, although he lost it to Novak Djokovic in four sets.

He, though, proved that was no flash in the pan as he beat Michael Ymer 7-6, 6-3 in the Citi Open semi-final. That followed an incredible battle win over Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-final to underline Kyrgios’ newfound competitive spirit.

It was Kyrgios’ five semi-final appearance in his last six tournaments, and he really does appear to have turned a corner in his career.

“I’m just happy to be in another final,” Kyrgios said.

“I didn’t get to sleep until 4.50am. I had so much adrenaline. I ate some dinner, got some treatment and just my body was so sore after last night.

“It was an epic battle [against Tiafoe]. I didn’t really do much today and I felt like my energy was a little flat today early on.

“It’s understandable – I’m only human – but my adrenaline for the final is going to be right there. I’m super excited for it.”

Nick Kyrgios is now looking in a strong position to be seeded for the US Open. He will be at least number 37 in the world rankings next week.
