Nick Kyrgios reveals that he is hoping to win a Grand Slam singles title ‘to shut people up’

Nick Kyrgios has revealed that he is targeting a Grand Slam singles title upon returning to competitive action, as he hopes to ‘shut people up’.

Kyrgios has played only one match over the past two years, losing in straight sets to Yibing Wu on the grass of Stuttgart in 2023.

This absence has been related to a number of injuries, with Kyrgios undergoing both knee and wrist surgery in his time away from the matchcourt.

And Kyrgios has now revealed to Code Sports what his motivation is to return to the ATP Tour, “I am coming back because something is keeping me around the game.

“I have beaten pretty much every person that has been put in front of me, made a final of a Grand Slam, won a doubles title in a Grand Slam, won multiple titles and made money. But I think the one thing that is now on my target is a Grand Slam. I think that will be the only thing that will shut people up at the end of the day. That will be my deep motivation.”

Kyrgios won the Australian Open doubles title alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis back in 2022, the same year that he also reached the Wimbledon singles final before losing to Novak Djokovic.

The 29-year-old went onto admit that he does not have many years of his career left in him, “I’m far from done, to be honest. I’m in the later stages of my career, but I still have one or two years left… I’m feeling extremely well. I’m hitting for around three hours every day now. My wrist from surgery has completely healed and I’m feeling motivated.”

It is not yet clear what Kyrgios’ plans for the 2025 season are, with Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley recently revealing that he expects him to be at the Melbourne major in January.

“Nick will be back,” said Tiley. “We know he’s out there practising and preparing for the summer. He loves playing in Australia. We expect to see him back and we know he’s on track with that preparation.”

When Kyrgios does eventually return, he has a protected ranking of World No.21 to use for up to nine months.

Inside the baseline…

Nick Kyrgios is no stranger to talking and making bold claims, and this appears to be another one of those. Although Kyrgios’ peak level can compete with many top players, the Australian has spent a significant amount of time away from the matchcourt and it is hard to imagine him winning seven matches at one tournament to claim the Grand Slam that he is targeting. Especially as he has never beaten Jannik Sinner or played Carlos Alcaraz, the two players that claimed the four major titles in 2024.
