‘New York is in my heart’ – Daniil Medvedev battles to third consecutive US Open semi-final

Daniil Medvedev batted into his third consecutive US Open semi-final with a four sets win against Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp.

The second seed reached the quarter-final stage without dropping a set, while his opponent had spent over 13 hours on court having come through a fifth set decider against Diego Schwartzman in previous round.

Medvedev took control of the match early, racing into a 5-1 lead. Zandschulp responded with a break, before the Russian secured a 13th consecutive set. The 2019 finalist went from strength-to-strength, winning the second set 6-0 in just 23 minutes.

Zandschulp threatened to mount a memorable comeback after fighting hard to win the third set 6-4, but an impressive Medvedev regrouped and closed out the match in style to secure a 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 victory.

“First two sets he was missing and I was controlling the game and then he got more aggressive, he made it much tougher for me. I couldn’t find my rhythm in the first two sets due to shadows, but in fourth set it was more clear and I could find my toss, rhythm and serve better.” Medvedev said in his post-match interview.

“I had my first Grand Slam breakthrough in New York reaching 2019 final against Rafael Nadal, so already New York is in my heart. Dominic Thiem played amazing in semi-finals last year, hopefully I can go one better this year.”

“Botic’s run was amazing, to come from qualifiers to main draw is amazing. He played so many long matches but was still able to come back, anything could’ve happened in fourth set.” he added.

Medvedev will face either Felix Auger-Aliassime or teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz for a place in Sunday’s final.
