The sixth-seeded Spaniard, who won the only previous meeting between the pair at Newport in July 2008, struggled with the Johannesburg altitude before going down 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 20 minutes at the Montecasino layout.

De Voest looked solid from the start, winning 25 of 30 first-serve points on his way to the second round.

There was no such trouble for the two other seeded players in action on Monday with fourth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, also from Spain, and Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis both cruising through.

World number 74 Garcia-Lopez overcame German Bjorn Phau 6-4 6-3, while 2006 Australian Open finalist Baghdatis eased past Andrew Anderson from South Africa 6-4 6-2 in the late game.

Anderson’s countryman Raven Klaasen made a winning start on his senior Tour debut by beating Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-3 7-5, while Leonardo Mayer won an all-Argentinian affair against Sergio Roitman 6-2 6-4.

Germany’s Simon Greul sent down eight aces as he eased through 6-2 6-4 against Victor Crivoi of Romania.
