Naomi Osaka gives huge Wimbledon hint after revealing ranking motivation
Naomi Osaka has given her clearest message yet over her potential attendance at Wimbledon after the WTA announced there would be no ranking points on offer in the women’s singles event
Naomi Osaka may not play at Wimbledon this year after revealing that she is motivated by the ‘idea of rising up the rankings’ which now won’t be possible if she were to play at The Championships
Last week it was confirmed by both the WTA and ATP Tours that no official ranking points would be on offer for players at the 2022 Wimbledon Slam event due to the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from their event.
Osaka hasn’t yet confirmed her decision but her recent comments do point to her not wanting to play.
“I’m someone who gets motivated by the idea of rising in the rankings. The intention of this measure was good, but the execution is all over the place”
Osaka’s best performances to date on the grass courts of SW19 in London have been a brace of last 32 appearances, so maybe the organisers of Wimbledon wouldn’t be losing too much sleep if she did decide to miss this year’s event. But it would be another body blow to the reputation of the event if one of the biggest draws in the women’s game were to opt to stay away.
