Nadal ousted fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, the 32nd seed, 7-5 6-4 6-4 in two hours and 39 minutes but in the third set called for the trainer after what tournament officials described as an aggravation of a right abdominal injury first suffered last month during his Cincinnati Masters semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic.

“I feel it a little bit now,” Nadal said of his injury. “I will try my best to recover for the next match.”

He added: “I’m here to work hard and try my best all the time.

“It was a difficult match but it’s important to win and I’m very happy to be in the fourth round. It was a good win against Nico and I’m very happy for that.”
