Murray remains confident

The Scot could become the first British player since the inception of the world rankings in 1973 to break into the top three if he makes it to the final of the Sony Ericsson Open.

He said: “I go in with the same attitude to all of the tournaments – I want to try to win them.”

He added: “I think that’s the best way to approach them. I understand that there’s great players around just now, but I feel good about my game and I’ve been getting better each year, so hopefully I can continue that this year.”

In order to overhaul current number three Novak Djokovic, Murray will have to negotiate a draw which could pit him against David Nalbandian, Fernando Verdasco and Rafael Nadal before he even reaches the showpiece match in Florida.

More than 3,000 rankings points separate Murray from Nikolay Davydenko in fifth spot, but he remains wary of bracketing himself, Djokovic, Nadal and Roger Federer above the rest of the game’s elite players.

“The difference in points would suggest there’s a big gap,” Murray said. “But on any given day, I would think that any of those guys could beat the top four players.

“I think that’s why right now tennis is in a really good spot because it’s not that predictable.

“There’s no question those guys can play the same level as the top players. It’s just a question of whether they can do it for the whole year or not.”
