The Scot made short work of Nikolay Davydenko to book his place in the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal yesterday, cruising to a 6-2 6-4 win and received another boost when Rafael Nadal’s defeat to Juan Martin Del Potro meant he would move up to number two in the world.

“A lot of the higher-ranked players took a break after Wimbledon and I think you need that,” Murray said on Sky Sports Xtra.

“It’s tough to just keep playing week-in, week-out and I think all of us came in fresh and pretty hungry.

“I said at the start of the week there might be some surprises but that shows how much I know about tennis.”
