Evans, 19, was preferred to James Ward and will make his Davis Cup debut against fellow teenager Jerzy Janowicz, who is ranked 41 places above the Briton at 261 in the world, after Murray has played Michal Przysiezny.

Murray is likely to have to play on all three days and will team up with good friend Ross Hutchins in Saturday’s doubles rubber, meaning local boy Ken Skupski and Colin Fleming will watch from the sidelines alongside Ward.

Poland will have high hopes of winning at least the doubles, with Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg both ranked just outside the world’s top 10.

The winner of the Europe/Africa Zone play-off at the Echo Arena will preserve their Group I status while the losers will be relegated to Group II.

Davis Cup draw:

Friday (starts 1200): Murray v Przysiezny; Evans v Janowicz

Saturday (starts 1430): Hutchins & Murray v Matkowski & Fyrstenberg

Sunday (starts 1300): Murray v Janowicz; Evans v Przysiezny
