The Wimbledon champion stretched her winning run to nine matches and she is yet to drop her serve in California. The Spaniard blasted 17 winners as she overhwelmed her youthful opponent from Croatia.

“I’m feeling good in the matches and happy to be in the semi-finals," said the two-time major winner after another emphatic victory. "It's one of my goals, in every tournament I play, to go forward. I know it's a little bit fast to go compete again, but I felt it was a good idea.

“I knew I had to match her [Konjuh], and be aggressive as well. I'm happy that I did it, and it didn't turn out bad in the second set."

Muguruza is joined in the last four by another player who excelled at Wimbledon. Coco Vandeweghe, who reached the quarter-finals at the All England Club, eased to a 6-2 6-3 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

At the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., Ekaterina Makarova reached the semi-finals after top seed, Simona Halep, retired in the early stages of the third set. The Romanian toiled in the afternoon heat and took the decision to quit after discussions with a doctor.

The Russian is joined in the last four by Julia Goerges. The German’s fine season continues as she overcame Monica Niculescu 6-3 6-4 in just over 90 minutes.
