‘Money means everything there’ – Wimbledon shamed over Russian ban by top pro
The decision to ban Russian tennis players from Wimbledon this year has been slammed by an ATP tour veteran who’s amassed over $0.5m in prize money from the famous grass court Slam event
Australian tennis professional John Millman says that Wimbledon should be donating to the Ukraine appeal if they are serious about their support for the anti-Russian campaign
Millman has competed at Wimbledon on 8 occasions amassing $516,667 in prize and 6 singles wins in that time but has referenced his first appearance at Wimbledon when he requested additional tickets for his family to be able to watch but was told he had to buy them.
Wimbledon has announced a ban on Russian and Belarusian players at the 2022 Championships in response to the war being raged in Ukraine.
Millman said on his Twitter account:
“When I qualified at Wimbledon for the 1st time I asked for two extra ground passes so family could watch – I was told to line up in the queue. Money means everything there, if you’re going to ban athletes then also give all your profits in aid. Then we’d know you’re serious.”
