Andreeva, a contender for the Madrid Open title, will play former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez for a place in the semi-finals.

Andreeva has already made tennis history ahead of her quarter-final clash by emulating the achievements of tennis legend Martina Hingis.

Hingis won the event in 1997, defeating Monica Seles 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

She was unable to defend her title a year later, losing to Venus Williams in the semi-finals.

In 1999, Hingis again exited the Miami Open at the semi-final stage, this time to Serena Williams.

Remarkably, Hingis made six consecutive quarter-final appearances in Miami, between 1997 and 2002.

As for Andreeva, she made her first Madrid Open quarter-final appearance in 2024, at the age of 16.

The Russian star defeated Taylor Townsend, Linda Noskova, Marketa Vondrousova and Jasmine Paolini before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Mirra Andreeva’s record against Leylah Fernandez

Andreeva and Fernandez first met on The WTA Tour at the 2023 Madrid Open.

Andreeva emerged victorious from their first-round contest, defeating the Canadian 6-3, 6-4 in the Spanish capital.

Later that year, Fernandez avenged her loss to the Russian. In the China Open round of 16, Fernandez defeated Andreeva 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

“She’s very tough to play against,” said Fernandez after the match, as per CBS Canada.

“I’m very happy with the way I fought and the way I found solutions. I wasn’t afraid of going to the net even though I was missing a lot.”

Andreeva will head into their third WTA clash in Madrid as the favourite. However, the Russian will need to be wary of Fernandez’s recent form: she has beaten 15th seed Iva Jovic on her way to the quarter-finals.
