The 28-year-old was the underdog going into the final but was roared on by the crowd to an impressive 6-4 6-3 victory.

It brought only Melzer’s second ATP World Tour title and his first in three years as he succeeded Horst Skoff as the home nation’s second champion.

“I can’t find the right words to describe my emotions,” said the seventh seed. “I am over the moon. I am very proud to win here.”

Victory would have increased Cilic’s albeit faint hopes of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London next month.

Melzer broke through in the seventh game of the first set and Cilic, who entered the tournament as a wild card after Juan Martin Del Potro’s withdrawal through injury, failed to make the most of his chances.
