Mathieu, a 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/4) winner, twice came back from a break down to win the first set.

Afterwards he said: “It was a very tough match. I have played him four times before and never beaten him.”

World number 49 Martin Vassallo Arguello also reached the second round after he rallied from a set down to defeat Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev 3-6 6-3 6-0. He will next face Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

In second round action, fourth seed Victor Hanescu served superbly en route to an impressive 6-2 6-1 win over Germany’s Rainer Schuettler.

He will next face lucky loser Alexandre Sidorenko, a 2-6 4-6 6-3 winner over Oscar Hernandez.
