Match between Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez is a ‘dream final’ says Dominic Thiem
US Open champion Dominic Thiem has described the upcoming final between Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez as a ‘dream final’.
The Austrian, who has been forced to watch the US Open from the sidelines after suffering a wrist injury, has been hugely impressed by both Raducanu and Fernandez.
Following their respective semi-final victories, the two young stars have set up the first all-teen US Open final since a 17-year-old Serena Williams beat 18-year-old Martina Hingis for her first Slam title.
Thiem believes the contrasting game styles and their differing US Open campaigns makes for an intriguing final match.
“It’s a dream final,” Thiem told Eurosport.
“Two amazing girls, two amazing players and two very contrary game styles and also super different how they went through the tournament.
“Leylah [Fernandez] had tough matches and she was down. Yesterday [against Sabalenka] was such a tough match for her and she’s in the final whereas Emma was cruising through the draw, she didn’t lose a set yet so it’s very different.
“But it’s a dream final and there were many, many great matches. I hope the final will be a great end to this tournament.”
