Maja Chwalinska went on a barnstorming run to reach the Roland Garros final last month.

Chwalinska became only the second qualifier in history to reach the final of a Grand Slam event; following on from Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open.

The Pole defeated Anna Kalinskaya and Diana Shnaider en route to the final stage, before losing to Mirra Andreeva.

Chwalinska went on to compete at Wimbledon, where she was knocked out in the first round by Mananchaya Sawangkaew.

“Therefore, I have to withdraw from this year’s MSC Hamburg Ladies Open.”

The Hamburg Open – a WTA 250 event – is set to take place from July 20 to 26.

Who won the first Hamburg Open Women’s Singles event?

The first Hamburg Open Women’s Singles event was held in 1982.

America’s Lisa Bonder, born in Columbus, Ohio, won the title after beating Czechia’s Renáta Tomanová 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

Since Bonder’s triumph, there have been 13 more Hamburg Open champions, including Conchita Martinez, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Martina Hingis.

Hingis, Venus Williams, Sanchez Vicario, and Steffi Graf are the only players who have won the title on more than one occasion.

Who is currently the best grass-court player on the WTA Tour?

Graf, a 22-time major champion, has won the most Hamburg titles in tournament history.

The German superstar won six consecutive editions of the event from 1987 to 1992.

She defeated Arantxa Sánchez Vicario 7–6, 6–2 to win her sixth and final title.

Sanchez Vicario has won the second-most Hamburg titles in history, capturing three between 1993 and 1996.

Venus Williams and Martina Hingis both won two titles apiece.
