Nick Kyrgios US Open 2022

‘Lots of people don’t want me to succeed’ – Nick Kyrgios lays into the doubters saying he’ll ‘never forget’

Nick Kyrgios has effortlessly progressed to the US Open fourth round for the first time ever but he can’t forgive the people who ‘hate the way’ he goes about his game

Australian superstar Nick Kyrgios thrives on carrying around a big chip on his shoulder caused by the people who don’t like him or the way he plays tennis. He’s the last Australian in the main draw of a men’s Slam which he points out is the case ‘literally every time’ but he uses it to give him the energy to keep playing even though he’s missing home.

Kyrgios was speaking after trouncing American JJ Wold in 3 straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 to set up the most mouth watering tie of the US Open fourth round where he’ll face Russian world no.1 and top seed Daniil Medvedev. The Australian who reached the final of Wimbledon this year holds a career 3-1 winning record over Medvedev and in this current run of form may well be the favourite going into the match even though Medvedev is the top seed.

“I want to be playing on the biggest stadiums in the world in front of millions of people broadcasted globally. That’s where I want to be. That is why I work hard. It makes it even sweeter. I know a lot of people don’t want me to succeed. I know a lot of people hate my game, the way I do things, they way I go about it.

“I’m the only Australian still left on the men’s side. It’s the same story every time, literally every time in a Grand Slam.

“I always thrive on it. I never want to forget all the things people say. I always carry this chip on my shoulder. I have it all in the back of my head when I’m playing. I want to be there. I want to be on prime time. I want to be on that screen, the screen they’re all watching.”
