Learner Tien has been given his best chance yet to win his debut ATP-level title after Daniil Medvedev has ended his season early.
Medvedev’s ATP Tour end-of-season resurgence was not enough to earn him qualification to the ATP Finals.
His loss against Alexander Zverev at the Paris Masters confirmed that he would not be playing at the Turin event, and he’s changed his season accordingly.
Medvedev was set to play one of the final ATP tournaments of the year in Metz, but he’s now withdrawn from the event.
His withdrawal has given Tien a golden opportunity to win his maiden ATP Tour title, which would cap off a stunning debut season.

Learner Tien’s run at the Moselle Open
Tien and Medvedev’s incredible rivalry in 2025 has been one of the highlights of the year as the pair have shared three incredible matches.
The young American knocked Medvedev out of the Australian Open and the China Open, before the Russian got his revenge at the Shanghai Masters.
The pair were set for a fourth clash in Metz, but Medvedev’s withdrawal has truly opened up the draw for the American.
Tien will play wild card Ugo Blanchet in the first round, and if he wins that he will no longer be playing Medvedev.
The American will play a lucky loser in round two, with a likely match against Corentin Moutet in the quarter-final.
After Medvedev’s withdrawal, Tien will not play a top 20 player until the semi-final at the earliest, which gives him a major opportunity to have a deep run for his final tournament of the year.
Should Tien get through to the semi-finals, he’s currently set to play Alexander Bublik, although it is now unclear whether he will play after having his ATP Finals qualification hopes dashed.
The incredible American records Learner Tien has smashed in 2025
Tien’s breakthrough year has seen him reach a first ATP-level final, as well as pick up his first victories at Grand Slams.
The American burst onto the scene at the Australian Open by reaching the fourth round, which helped him earn several accolades.
He became the youngest player to reach the fourth round since Rafael Nadal in 2005, and also the second youngest American man in history after Pete Sampras.
Tien did not rest on his laurels after his success in Australia either.
The star became the youngest American man to beat a Top 3 player since Andy Roddick in 2001 when he beat Zverev at the Mexican Open a month later.
Later on in the year, Tien’s success at the Canadian Open saw him become the youngest American to reach the round of 16 at a Masters event for eight years.
