Daniil Medvedev’s resurgence has continued into Vienna with yet another win, and it’s helped him end a streak dating back to Wimbledon 2024.

Medvedev won the Almaty Open in Kazakhstan to secure his first ATP title since his Italian Open win in 2023.

The Russian’s split with coach Gilles Cervara has changed his fortunes, with Medvedev tasting defeat on just three occasions since the US Open.

Medvedev continues his impressive streak at the Vienna Open with a victory over Nuno Borges, and it helped him break a 15-month streak on the ATP Tour.

Daniil Medvedev’s resurgence continues at the Vienna Open

Medvedev lost a tie-break to Borges in his first round match at the Vienna Open, but he managed to overcome the Portuguese star to pick up yet another win.

The Russian’s latest victory means he has now won five matches in a row following his success at the Almaty Open.

Medvedev has not achieved a five-match winning streak since his performance at Wimbledon in 2024, where he reached the semi-final of the Grand Slam.

The 2021 US Open winner defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic, Alexandre Müller, Jan-Lennard Struff, Grigor Dimitrov, and Jannik Sinner at the grass court tournament in 2024.

Medvedev was beaten at Wimbledon by eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz, but the Russian would surely not have imagined it would take 15 months to achieve the same streak.

Daniil Medvedev’s route to the Vienna Open final

At World No. 13, Medvedev has an outside shot at qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin with just a couple of tournaments left before the season-ending competition.

The Russian will play Corentin Moutet in round two, the player he defeated to lift the Almaty Open in Kazakhstan.

Should the World No. 13 win that tie, he will likely play Lorenzo Musetti, which could have significant implications for ATP Finals qualification.

The Italian is currently in the last qualifying place for the Turin event, but a quarter-final exit in the European Open has put Musetti under pressure.

Medvedev will likely have to beat Alexander Zverev in the semi-final, which would set up a tie with Sinner in the final.
