Laver Cup 2024 Preview: Everything you need to know about the event

The 2024 Laver Cup is almost here, with Team World and Team Europe set to go to battle for a seventh time.

And we, at Tennishead, have all you need to know about tennis’ answer to the Ryder Cup:

What is the Laver Cup and how does it work?

The Laver Cup was founded by Roger Federer’s management company, Team8, alongside Tennis Australia and pays homage to 11-time singles Grand Slam champion Rod Laver.

Prague hosted the first edition back in 2017, pitting two six-player teams of Team Europe and Team World against each other.

The tournament takes place over three days, with each day consisting of three singles matches and one doubles contest.

Each match is played over a best-of-three format, with the third set being played as a match tie-break to 10.

All players must play at least one singles match, with at least four also competing in doubles.

However, the fun twist with the Laver Cup comes with the point scoring, as each day differs in terms of how many points a match is worth.

Day one matches are all worth one point, day two are worth two points and day three offers three points, giving the team captains some very tricky decisions to make in terms of selection.

To win the Laver Cup, a team must earn at least 13 points, but in the case of a 12-all draw a decider would be played to provide a victor.

When is the 2024 Laver Cup?

This year’s Laver Cup gets underway on Friday 19th September, with the first singles match getting underway at 1pm local time (12pm BST).

Action will continue to unfold until Sunday 22nd September, when a Laver Cup champion will be crowned.

Where is the 2024 Laver Cup held?

Every year the Laver Cup alternates between being hosted in Europe and the rest of the world, with last year’s event being held in Vancouver, Canada.

This year sees the event return to Europe in the German capital of Berlin, with the 17,000 seated Uber Arena playing host to the iconic black hard courts in 2024.

Who is playing at the 2024 Laver Cup?

As previously mentioned, each team consists of six players, with three players earning their spots through the ATP rankings and the other half being selected by their respective captains.

Both Bjorn Borg (Team Europe) and John McEnroe (Team World) are captaining their teams for a seventh consecutive year, but it will also be for the final time.

Next year, Borg will be replaced by 1983 Roland Garros winner Yannick Noah and McEnroe will make way for former World No.1 Andre Agassi.

Borg’s final team consists of Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas, with Flavio Cobolli and Jan-Lennard Struff joining as alternates.

Alcaraz is the only player from the six selected players for Team Europe making his debut, with the Spaniard beginning his Laver Cup campaign alongside Zverev in doubles action.

Team World is led by US Open finalist Taylor Fritz, who is joined by Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, Alejandro Tabilo, Francisco Cerundolo and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Are ranking points and prize money on offer at the Laver Cup?

With the Laver Cup being a licensed ATP event since 2019, matches count towards official head-to-head’s, but there are no ranking points on offer.

However, there is a financial incentive with players receiving a participation fee based off ranking.

There is also a prize money offering, with each player from the winning team earning $250,000, compared to losing players receiving $125,000 each.

Previous history of the Laver Cup

Team Europe dominated the first four editions of the competition, but in the last couple of years the tide has started to turn.

This was definitely the case in Vancouver last year, with Team World thrashing Team Europe 13-2, culminating in a doubles victory for the American pairing of Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton.

Although there is somewhat of an exhibition feel about this event, it has played a part in some iconic moments in tennis history including the retirement of Roger Federer back in 2022.
