The Wimbledon champion ended Caroline Garcia’s giantkilling run with a 6-3 6-4 victory in an hour and 21 minutes to book a semi-final clash with Elina Svitolina, who claimed a surprise 6-4 7-6(3) win against Angelique Kerber.
Garcia had upset Venus Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska en route to the last eight, but while she hit fewer unforced errors than Kvitova, the 20-year-old found just 13 winners against the world No.3.
"I know Garcia had a great week here, that she beat Venus and Aga 7-6 in the third. You always have to be prepared for a fight," Kvitova said. "I knew that she can play really well, and that she can serve well and play very aggressively from the baseline, so I knew that I had to be ready for her.”
Victory in Wuhan would secure Kvitova’s place at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore. She would be the fourth player to qualify behind Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep.
