The 37-year-old, whose one grand slam title came in 1996, has been managing and mentoring the former amateur star for the past two seasons and made his debut on the bag in the final round of the Dutch Futures event on the European Challenge Tour.

“It gave us the chance to talk more and I could give Wil some advice,” Krajicek told the European Tour website.

“I appreciate there is a difference between tennis and golf, but both are individual games and I help him in terms of the mental side and handling the pressure.

“I’ve been passing on my own experience of how to handle certain situations and moments out on the course. I tried to give him some advice about some of his shots too – but he ignored that!”

After a closing 70 for 45th place Besseling commented: “Maybe we will work something out so it happens more often.

“Richard’s been through some tough times in his own career like I’m having myself at the moment, so he is helping me through it.

“We talk about what’s going on in my mind and it was good to have him out there.”
