Richard Krajicek succumbed to Pat Cash 6-7 6-4 10-6 at the AEGON Masters event at the Royal Albert Hall but the Dutchman could be forgiven for having more pressing matters on his mind.

The former Wimbledon champion is one of three names in the running for the ATP CEO position that is set to be vacated by Adam Helfant at the end of this year.

Speaking to Andrew Castle after his opening round loss in London, Krajicek responded to the notion that he is too inexperienced for the position.

“Well I am turning 40 next week so I think when after four I’m old enough. I would love to do the job and I hope in the next few weeks I am going to get an answer and then I’m going to be, maybe more on the tour,” said Krajicek as the Royal Albert Hall broke into rapturous applause.

A six-man board, made up of three player representatives and three tour representatives, will agree on the next CEO, who will be the third person to hold the position in seven years.

When it was put to Krajicek that it maybe easier to play than run the ATP he responded: “Yeh that’s true. When you are in trouble on a tennis court I just hit an ace and now when you are in trouble some other skills come in handy.

“I think I have a lot of experience, eight-year tournament director of an ATP 500 event, I have been a player, you know, all my life basically so I think I could do a good job and I hope that I have a good chance.”

This week’s event in London continues until Sunday with players like John McEnroe, Goran Ivanisevic, Tim Henman and Mark Philippoussis on show.
