Keys surpassing expectations


In only her second match back after undergoing surgery to her left wrist during the off-season, Keys outplayed the big-hitting Japanese teenager to claim a resounding 6-1 6-4 victory in 57 minutes.

Having not played since the WTA Finals last October, Keys, who beat Mariana Duque-Marino in her opening match in Indian Wells, readily admits she is exceeding any expectations she set on her return to action.

“I’m just happy to be out here, happy to have another win, happy to get to play tomorrow,” said Keys. “I definitely had really low expectations. I was like, if I get a set, I’ll be happy. And to win? It’s always tough to come back and everyone is in the middle of their season.

Next up for Keys is 2011 champion Caroline Wozniacki, who beat Katerina Siniakova 6-3 6-1 to reach the fourth round. 

“I’m pleased with the performance, it was nice to get out of there quickly and be out of the sun,” said Wozniacki, who beat Keys at last year’s US Open in their only previous meeting. “Obviously tomorrow is going to be another tough one, Madison is playing well. I’m excited to get another match.”
