Keothavong took the first set 6-3 but was made to work harder in the second set, eventually seeing out the win by clinching the tie-break 7/4.

She will next face Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova who was a set up and 2-3 down when first-round opponent Kaia Kanepi retired with a hip injury.
