In 2025, Joao Fonseca enjoyed a breakout year on the ATP Tour.

The Brazilian youngster first made his name at the Australian Open, stunning ninth seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets in his first ever main draw match at a Grand Slam.

Fonseca continued to rise up the rankings after a multitude of impressive performances, ending the year ranked world number 25 after capturing his second ATP Tour title at the Swiss Indoors tournament.

Fonseca, who is a potential future challenger to the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, will hope to continue his monumental rise at the start of 2026.

Joao Fonseca is set to defend his Argentina Open title

Joao Fonseca already has a rich history at the Argentina Open.

The Brazilian won his first ATP Tour title at the 2025 event. Fonseca was unseeded at the event, but managed to defeat three home favourites on his way to the final, before defeating fifth seed Francisco Cerundolo to claim the title.

Fonseca will hope to defend his 2025 title after his participation in the 2026 Argentina Open was confirmed earlier this week.

Fonseca is set to be the fourth seed in Buenos Aires; Lorenzo Musetti, Francisco Cerundolo and Luciano Darderi are also set to play at the event.

Other notable names on the entry list include Lorenzo Sonego, Sebastien Baez and Matteo Berrettini: one of the heroes of Italy’s 2025 Davis Cup campaign and the 2021 Wimbledon Men’s Singles finalist.

What did Fonseca say after winning his first ATP Tour title in Argentina?

After winning the 2025 final in Buenos Aires, Fonseca was in awe of the support he received in Argentina.

Brazil and Argentina have historically had a heated sporting rivalry, particularly in football circles.

As per the ATP Tour, Fonseca said: “Unbelievable week, even in Argentina there are some Brazilians cheering for me.

“That’s just amazing. Every Brazilian, everyone from their country wants this support from your own country. For me, this [moment] that I’m living is just unbelievable.

“I want to thank my family, my friends and my sponsors for just helping me achieve my dream, which is to play tennis.

“Of course I want to be No. 1, of course I want to win Slams, titles, but my dream is just to play tennis, and I’m living it.”

The 2026 Argentina Open is an ATP 250 event that will take place between February 9 and 15.

The event is contested clay courts at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, which is known as the “Cathedral of Argentinean tennis.”

The last Argentine player to win the title was Facundo Diaz Acosta, who won the event in 2024.
