Joao Fonseca’s 2025 Laver Cup campaign began perfectly with a win over Flavio Cobolli in San Francisco, and it helped him make history at the tournament.

Team Europe lived up to their favourites tag at the Laver Cup by rushing to a 3-1 lead on the opening day of play.

Joao Fonseca picked up Team World’s only victory on day one, impressing in a straight sets victory against Flavio Cobolli.

The Brazilian teenager made Laver Cup history by toppling the man who knocked him out of the Halle Open earlier this year.

Joao Fonseca is the youngest Laver Cup winner in history

Fonseca’s win against Cobolli means he’s now the youngest Laver Cup winner in the history of the tournament.

The Brazilian defeated a record that was set just hours before, as 20-year-old Jakub Mensik defeated Alex Michelsen in three sets.

Before 2025, Alexander Zverev held the record of the youngest winner for his victory against Denis Shapovalov in the inaugural event.

Ben Shelton in 2023 and Stefanos Tsistipas in 2019 also make up the top five for their wins over Arthur Fils and Taylor Fritz, respectively.

The 2025 Laver Cup action will continue on September 20 and 21 to crown the winner of the eighth tournament.

Joao Fonseca reacts to debut Laver Cup win

Fonseca took to the court after Team Europe had amassed a 2-0 lead in the opening matches and the Brazilian shared how he felt heading into the clutch match.

“I knew it was going to be a difficult match, and I knew how important it was,” Fonseca revealed after his victory.

So, yeah, I knew how important it was, and happy the way that I managed to keep positive, [and] keep good mentally during the match,” continued the Brazilian.

The star has already etched his name in Laver Cup history and there’s every chance he will continue to do so over the weekend.
