Joao Fonseca and Ben Shelton had their first-ever meeting yesterday, with the latter coming out on top after three top-quality sets.
Naturally, the conditions dulled the spectacle that could have been, but this is a match-up we are certain to see plenty more of across the next decade and beyond.
Two of the sport’s biggest hitters, and two of its youngest rising stars, it was intriguing to watch the dynamics at play as they not only battled the pressure of an ATP 500 quarter-final, but also the conditions and bragging rights between two talents both seeking to continue their respective upward trajectories.
However, taking to social media afterwards, Joao Fonseca was keen to congratulate Ben Shelton on the win, but also sought to explain the reasons behind his loss.
Joao Fonseca sends message to Ben Shelton after losing to him in Munich
The Brazilian began by thanking his coaches for another successful week, enjoying a solid run which has only added to his growing reputation on the ATP Tour: “Another good week with a solid level of tennis,” he began.
Fonseca then turned his attention to the conditions, adding: “Today the conditions were faster and I felt like it took me a bit to adapt. It’s about keeping at it, visualising the mistakes and improving session by session.”
Will Joao Fonseca be the man to break up Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance?
If not, who will be?
He concluded with a message for Shelton, noting: “It was an honour to share the court with you, good luck brother @BenShelton. Onwards, soon Madrid.”
Ironically, after Shelton had spoken about Fonseca’s fans whilst still on court, he too explained how the conditions had played a part in their match.
Joao Fonseca has finally found consistency after tough start to 2026
At the start of 2026, there was plenty of excitement around Fonseca and what he might be able to achieve throughout the year.
After all, he had impressed all throughout 2025, and the expectation was that he would immediately kick on in the campaign.
Alas, that did not account for injuries, and the 19-year-old had unfortunately suffered a setback that disrupted his entire pre-season.

He therefore entered the season unprepared, through no fault of his own, and he struggled because of it.
Early exits at the Australian Open, Argentina Open and Rio Open had many fearing the worst, and had others questioning whether all the hype was deserved.
Well, with his fitness woes firmly behind him, Fonseca has gone about proving those doubters remarkably wrong.
Will you still be watching the Madrid Open?
Two BIG withdrawals…
He has now reached the fourth round in Indian Wells and the second round in Miami, losing to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz respectively, as well as the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo and Munich.
At last, this teenage talent has found consistency, and it’s coming at the perfect time with a huge opportunity emerging for Fonseca at the Madrid Open.
