Ben Shelton is into the Munich Open quarter-finals, having rallied well to beat a spirited Joao Fonseca across three sets.
Having taken the opener, it seemed like experience was going to prove decisive in a simple victory for the American.
However, to discount the youthful brilliance of the Brazilian is to take a big risk, with Joao Fonseca having already proven himself a true threat to any of the world’s elite.
He fought hard, but in the end, Ben Shelton’s quality told. Speaking afterwards, he had nothing but positive things to say about the 19-year-old superstar who continues to shine even in defeat.
Ben Shelton reacts on court after beating Joao Fonseca
Chatting on court, Shelton began by assessing the conditions.
He blamed the warmth for the lack of fireworks when rallying with Fonseca, but appeared to insist that he looks forward to the opportunity to one day go to war with this talented teenager in the near future.
Will you still be watching the Madrid Open?
Two BIG withdrawals…
The world number eight claimed: “Certainly a much warmer day today, which caused more serve plus one tennis. Shorter rallies compared to some of the colder days. Not some of the crazy rallies that people wanted.
“But he’s an electric player. One of the fastest rising stars we’ve seen on tour. It’s been cool to see his trajectory.”
Shelton concluded by praising Fonseca’s fanbase, which has taken over tennis at times in the last year or so. He admitted: “For me, being out here sharing the court with him is a privilege for sure. He’s got such great energy and great fans around the world. I really enjoy these type of atmospheres”
Joao Fonseca could make personal history at the Madrid Open
Fonseca may not have made any finals yet during this clay-court season, but he has certainly proved his ability to compete at the highest level.
And, with the Madrid Open just around the corner, the youngster will arguably never get a better opportunity to go deep, and maybe even claim his maiden Masters 1000 title.
Will Joao Fonseca be the man to break up Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance?
If not, who will be?
After all, with Novak Djokovic having withdrawn from the Madrid Open, followed by Carlos Alcaraz’s injury ruling him out, two of the top three contenders have been removed from contention.
Adding to the fact that Jannik Sinner is yet to confirm his attendance, and it feels like an opportunity is brewing for someone.
Fonseca has every right to believe that he is that person.
