Jenson Brooksby can give Novak Djokovic ‘a lot of fits because he’s just tricky’, believes Reilly Opelka
Reilla Opelka believes compatriot Jenson Brooksby can give Novak Djokovic a tough match in their US Open fourth round clash.
Brooksby produced a remarable comeback to defeat Russian Aslan Karatsev in a five-set thriller to claim the biggest win of his young career. The 20-year-old has reached fourth round of a Major for the first time in his career.
World number one Djokovic beat Japanse Kei Nishikori after losing a marathon opening set. The Serb is four wins away from completing calendar Grand Slam after already winning Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in 2021.
Opelka, also in fourth round, believes his younger compatriot can have success against Djokovic.
“I’m curious to see his match with Djokovic,” Opelka said. “I think he can give Djokovic a lot of fits because he’s just tricky. Nakashima is as pure of a ball-striker as there is. I think the young guys are going to be the guys to beat from the American standpoint.”
The American added that fellow American’s Sebastian Korda and Brandon Nakashima are destined for great things in Majors.
“I mean, I think it’s just one week,” Opelka added. “I think Brooksby is going to be a big second-week guy. Nakashima. I think Korda. I think the young guys are better than us, if I’m being honest. I think Korda is a hell of a player. Brooksby is brutal.”Reilly
Opelka on his part beat Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. He will face Lloyd Harris in fourth round and could potentially his compatriot in semi-finals.
