‘Jannik Sinner will be in the top very soon’, says Borna Coric

World No. 24 Borna Coric believes Jannik Sinner – who will play in the Miami Open final today – will reach the top of men’s tennis very soon.

Italian 19-year-old Sinner will face Hubert Hurkacz in the final of the Masters 1000 tournament, after he beat Roberto Bautista Agut in the semi-finals.

Coric – touted as an original ‘ATP Next Gen’ star – was asked who he thought had the highest potential from the latest young crop of Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti and Carlos Alcaraz.

“To be honest, all of them are great players, showing huge potential, and they are already ranked quite high,” said Coric in an interview with Sportskeeda.

“Considering his breakthrough, Jannik Sinner will be in the top very soon in my opinion. But all of them are amazing players and good guys, so I’m looking forward to playing against them.”

The 24-year-old Croatian also gave his thoughts on the COVID-adjusted ranking system and playing during the pandemic.

“I can understand those critics about ranking points; it is not easy for lower-ranked players to break through now,” Coric added.

“I don’t have a really strong opinion on the topic though, since I always try to accept things the way they are.

“For me, it is also much harder to break into the top 10, so you just need to accept the situation and work hard.

“My first and biggest motivation is always the game. I love it and enjoy competing. So for me, the only thing which is tough is (to) travel with all the COVID testings and all the things we need to do to arrive at a certain place, which is not easy.

“But playing tennis is something I love, so I do not have a problem with motivation.”
