Jannik Sinner - US Open 2022

Jannik Sinner one of only two men who ‘can threaten’ Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open claims Goran Ivanisevic

Jannik Sinner has been backed as one of only two men that ‘can threaten’ defending champion Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open this year, alongside 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

Sinner has reached at least the quarter-final of every major tournament, and Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic has praised the Italian.

“Alcaraz is a story by himself, and Sinner is the only one who can threaten him at the US Open, along with Novak,” claims the 2001 Wimbledon champion.

He continued, “The game that Sinner has doesn’t match Alcaraz and they have had very interesting matches so far. Also, if [Daniil] Medvedev plays well on the day, he is also a phenomenal player for me.

“Novak remains the only ‘dinosaur’ among those older ones, the rest are all young guys. It’s a normal sequence, but there’s still something to ask the elders.”

At the US Open last year, Sinner and Alcaraz met at the quarter-final stage with the Spaniard saving a match point before going onto win the incredible five-set contest.

The rivalry has become one of the most highly anticipated on the ATP tour, which is something that Ivanisevic commented on, “It will be an interesting rivalry. Each of their matches is tense. There is no one who can stay in a long match with Alcaraz except Sinner and Djokovic. Those who cannot stay for long at Alcaraz’s pace can immediately pack their rackets and go home.”

The next time we will see either Sinner or Alcaraz is at the Toronto Masters event next week, with Djokovic skipping it due to ‘fatigue’.
