The Serbian went down 5-7 6-3 6-3 to the Italian, who registered her first win in six career meetings with Jankovic.

The 26-year-old Pennetta is seeking her third title of the season but faces a tough test in the quarter-finals when she meets either fifth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska or Katarina Srebotnik.

Two unseeded players booked their place in the last eight.

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka demolished Monica Niculescu 6-0 6-0 while Czech qualifier Petra Kvitova beat Sofia Arvidsson 6-2 6-1.

Second seed Ana Ivanovic is a potential quarter-final opponent for Kvitova, but the Serb must first get past Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli in the second round.

The only other seeded player in second-round action Thursday is number four Vera Zvonareva, who will clash with Anabel Medina Garrigues.
