Jamie Murray claims Andy Murray has a ‘wild’ tennis record which does not get spoken about enough

Andy Murray is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, but his title total was severely hit by his competition.

Murray managed to win three Grand Slam titles, two Olympic Gold Medals, and 14 Masters 1000 titles despite competing with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal for his entire career.

Despite only winning three Grand Slam titles, many, including Andre Agassi, believe Murray was as good as the ‘Big Three’.

Jamie Murray has now highlighted a career record held by his brother that he believes is underrated by fans.

Andy Murray of Great Britain lifts the US Open championship trophy after defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the men's singles final match on Day Fifteen of the 2012 US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 10, 2012 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. Murray defeated Djokovic 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2.

Murray saw up-close-and-personal just how good his brother was as he was competing at the very top of the ATP Tour.

The Scotsman believes his brother’s record of 11 Grand Slam finals throughout his career is severely overlooked.

Speaking on Greg Rusedski’s podcast, he said: “I could see first hand all the efforts that he put in on and off the court to give himself the best chance to compete with these guys.

“He totally deserved the titles that he got. Of course, he won three Slams, which is an amazing career. Maybe people felt like he could have won more, but for me an amazing stat is that he was in 11 Grand Slam finals.

“That is a wild stat in itself. People don’t talk about that, they talk about him winning three Slams, but almost for me being in 11 Slam finals is almost more impressive.”

Rusedski agreed with Murray’s Grand Slam feats, dubbing his consistency as the majors as ‘unbelievable’.

“It’s interesting because he has the same number as Stan Wawrinka and Stan himself, who is a great player, has said I am not even in the category of Andy Murray, because of the consistency that he’s had,” he said. “11 finals with six Australian Open finals. It’s unbelievable.”

Andy Murray’s Grand Slam final record

It’s a testament to the sheer dominance on the ‘Big Three’ that Murray never lost a Grand Slam final to anyone outside of Federer or Djokovic.

The Scotsman never even played Nadal in a Grand Slam final, having normally met the King of Clay in the last four.

Where does Andy Murray rank among the best players in tennis?

“On the men’s, I would say top 20 [of all time]. Becker, Edberg, Wilander, Connors, McEnroe, Lendl [are all above him]. Andy was brilliant, amazing, but I’d put those guys ahead. Sampras, Agassi, Laver, Rosewall. I could name 15 ahead of Andy, easily. Bjorg.”

Five of Murray’s eight defeats in Grand Slam finals came against Djokovic, while Federer made up the other three losses.

Milos Raonic was the only player outside of the ‘Big Three’ to meet Murray in a Grand Slam final, and he was dispatched in straight sets at Wimbledon in 2016.

Murray ended his career with two Wimbledon crowns and one US Open, but it’s baffling to think how many he could have collected were it not for the ‘Big Three’.
