Jakub Mensik’s China Open campaign was brought to an abrupt halt on Monday as he was forced to retire while trailing Alex de Minaur.
Mensik has become a household name on the ATP Tour following an impressive year, which has included a maiden Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open.
This week, the 20-year-old had been competing in China Open alongside the likes of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.
The Czech star began the week positively, claiming victories against Miomir Kecmanovic and Arthur Cazaux.
However, while trailing 4-1 to Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals, Mensik retired from the match due to an issue with his knee.
Jakub Mensik is very grateful for the ‘incredible support’ of those in China

Following his withdrawal on Monday, Mensik conveyed his post-match thoughts on social media.
On X [Twitter], Mensik said: “I gave my best today, but unfortunately wasn’t able to perform at 100%.
“The past days and weeks have been very demanding, and my body – especially my knee – needs some time to recover.
“My goal now is to be fully ready to compete this weekend in Shanghai.
“Overall, it has been a truly great week here in Beijing and I’m very grateful for the incredible support from everyone in China. See you soon!”
If Mensik recovers in time for the Shanghai Masters, he will face either Yi Zhou or Jesper de Jong, before a potential third-round match against US Open semi-finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime.
De Minaur wishes Mensik a ‘speedy recovery’
Alex de Minaur, recognised as one of the politest, most well-mannered players on tour, sent a message of encouragement to his Czech opponent after the match.
On Instagram, de Minaur said: “Into the semis here in Beijing.
“Definitely not the way I wanted to move forward. Wishing Jakub Mensik a speedy recovery, hope to see you back out there soon.”

De Minaur has continued to impress in China after playing a key part in Team World’s Laver Cup victory.
The Australian’s victory over Mensik has set up a titanic contest against world number two Jannik Sinner in the China Open semi-finals.
Unfortunately for the Australian, he has not defeated Sinner once in their 10 meetings.
