Goran Ivanisevic: ‘Novak Djokovic can overtake Roger Federer and break titles record’

Novak Djokovic can overtake Roger Federer for titles won on the ATP tour and even approach the all-time record of Jimmy Connors claims his coach Goran Ivanisevic.

The 21-time Slam champion has won four of the nine tournaments he has played in 2022, including one of the two Majors in which he was able to compete. Trophies in Tel Aviv and Astana have taken Djokovic to 90 career singles titles in all. That puts him 13 behind Federer’s tally of 103.

“Everything related to some kind of record is interesting to Novak,” Ivanisevic told Sportske novosti. “The question remains how much he will play and how long it will last, but at the moment he is in now, I am sure he could attack or influence those records as well.

“He was always physically fit, that was never a problem. And if he stays like that, I am convinced that he could stay at the top or near the top for another three years and fight for all the titles.”

Jimmy Connors holds the record for most men’s singles titles with 109 between 1972 and 1989. Federer won his century plus of trophies from 2001 to 2019.

Djokovic claimed his first tour level title in 2006 on the clay of Amersfoort, Netherlands. He has not won more than five titles in a season since 2016. As such, one might expect him to require three or four seasons to surpass Federer and potentially Connors.

Should Djokovic compete at the Paris Masters and in Turin at the ATP Finals, he could end 2022 with 92 titles to his name.
